Glass Dairy sheds Light on Organics
06/16/2010
A new state-of-the-art ‘glass dairy’ offering a totally transparent view of Germany’s organic production processes, was opened by the Prime Minister of Brandenburg, Matthias Platzeck on 6. January 2010.
Gläserne Meierei in Münchehofe, near Berlin, processes organic milk from the Spreewald region and markets dairy products regionally across Brandenburg and Berlin.
This is a new breed of organic production facility - the first of its kind to be created as a ‘show dairy’. Visitors get a comprehensive insight into the future of organic dairy production thanks to the floor-to-ceiling glass walls of the public gallery, and the boards which explain amongst other things, Elopak´s packaging benefits and filling processes.
Placing regionality and eco-farming hand-in-hand, the new 6,000 square metre dairy meets the growing needs of the consumer, providing clarity and confidence in the origins of the food they buy and strengthening the credibility of high-quality products in the region.
The new dairy is a subsidiary of Gläserne Meierei GmbH, which was established in Upahl, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, and has been processing organic milk since 2001. Foundations were laid in 2008 and annual processing capacity has increased from six to 35 million litres of raw milk.
Three products will be packaged in Elopak cartons at the new dairy. Traditionally made organic 3.7% fat Heumilch, Münchehofe fresh organic 3.7% fat milk and fresh 1.5% low-fat organic Münchehofe milk are all packaged in one-litre Pure-Pak® with screw-cap.
