Elopak Receives Certification From Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI)

The Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) has announced that it has officially certified Elopak for the company’s material stewardship of aluminium throughout its entire value chain.

Aluminium is a key component of the lining in some of Elopak’s aseptic cartons. This certification covers not only Elopak’s corporate functions but also the coating process at various facilities.

The ASI Performance Standard was developed through an extensive multi-stakeholder consultation process and is the only comprehensive, voluntary sustainability standard for the aluminium value chain. It assesses material stewardship right the way through its lifecycle: from sourcing, to product design, to recycling and end-of-life disposal.

Independent, third-party audits of Elopak’s facilities were carried out by DNV Business Assurance Services UK Ltd and found that Elopak is a responsible and sustainable producer of aluminium-lined cartons.

Reacting to the news, Elopak’s Director of Sustainability Marianne Groven said, “We are delighted to receive our ASI Performance Standard Certification, which underscores our continued commitment to sustainability. The responsible stewardship of materials is vital to Elopak’s ambitions to become even more sustainable, both as a company and through the cartons we produce.”

ASI’s Chief Executive Officer Fiona Solomon congratulated Elopak on the news, explaining that “a life cycle approach is critical to aluminium, particularly for packaging, to support the transition to a circular economy.”

“We look forward to Elopak’s next step for Chain of Custody Certification, to support responsible sourcing,” she added.

The Aluminium Stewardship Initiative is a global, multi-stakeholder, non-profit standards setting and certification organisation working towards the responsible production, sourcing and stewardship of aluminium. ASI has over 160 member organisations across a variety of different sectors and industries.
